Fostering Entrepreneurship: HABI Helps Weaving Communities Thrive Through Sponsor A Weaver Program

HABI: The Philippine Textile Council is committed to supporting local indigenous weaving communities, particularly those in remote areas of the archipelago. This year, we have launched the Sponsor A Weaver program which aims to empower communities by helping them develop into independent entrepreneurs. Thanks to the generous donations received during our kickoff, we were able to sponsor three talented weavers to participate in the Likhang HABI Market Fair last October: Agustin Sudaw, Hininang Tu, and Jie Tboli Designs.

During the three-day fair, Agustin Sudaw from Lake Sebu, South Cotabato, shared that he had the valuable opportunity to connect with a diverse group of designers, students, and even professors from prestigious universities in Manila. These interactions provided him with fresh insights and inspiration, helping him to better understand current trends and design innovations.

Agustin believes that this experience will be instrumental in refining his abaca designs, allowing him to elevate their quality and uniqueness. With these newfound perspectives, he is confident that his creations will not only stand out but also become more competitive in the broader market.

Hininang Tu from Cabadbaran, Agusan del Norte, arrived at the fair in full force, bringing their family along to help showcase their rich cultural heritage. Their designs, rooted in the traditions passed down by Denis Abaquita’s mother, have been carefully preserved and adapted through generations.

Over the years, their Manobo-inspired creations, featuring the intricate "suyam" embroidery, have evolved into a diverse collection of stylish clothing, distinctive beadwork, and unique, handcrafted bags. Each piece reflects a deep connection to their ancestral craft while embracing contemporary design, making their products both timeless and modern.

Estrellita Marcelo Godwino of Jie Tboli Designs, also from Lake Sebu, South Cotabato, revealed that it was their first time participating in the fair, and the experience exceeded their expectations.

She expressed their excitement at seeing so many people not only discovering their products but also expressing genuine interest by placing bulk orders! Estrellita noted that this newfound recognition has inspired them to expand their reach and continue sharing their Tboli designs with the world!

The Sponsor A Weaver program was designed to alleviate the financial challenges often faced by local artisans, such as the costs of materials, travel, and accommodation. By covering these expenses, we have helped skilled weavers to showcase their craftsmanship at a prominent platform, providing them with invaluable exposure and opportunities for growth. This support not only helped bring their unique, culture-rich creations to a wider audience but also empowered them to continue preserving and promoting their traditional crafts.

We are excited to continue this journey of support and look forward to helping more artisans in the future, expanding opportunities for local talent to shine on larger stages!
